le douze mars

Homework: Write out exercise 8 on page 168.

A parler franchement, l'examen est un desastre.
To speak frankly (honestly), the test is/was a disaster.

You will all retake it Wednesday and scores need to come up dramatically.  As it is, we had one A-, two B's, a couple of C's, and all of the rest were D's and F's.  I will count the new score.
In a word, STUDY
Copy the following notes:
Listening Section

les is pronounced "lay" and le is pronounced luh.  la is pronounced "lah"
To say the students you need to put an "s" on the end of the word for student, just like you do in English.
Elèves.  Do the same for brothers (frères).      Très.  Hint: if you say "ay" it's é.  "e accent aigue." "eh" is è "e accent grave"
 ê="e accent circonflexe"  ç = cedille
à  â ï  "i trema"
les élèves=The students  Les élèves     l'élève (1)
 The for plural nouns is les.  The computers = Les ordinateurs
I obviously didn't teach this well enough.  The friends = Les copains
Je préfère
L'ordinateur.  If word starts with vowel, drop the "e" from "le" and make it l'
J'ai I have. (not "I") If word starts with vowel, drop the "e" from "je"
Je=I (not I have)
Je parle = I speak. Il parle. Thomas et Olivier parlent.  Nous parlons
You absolutely must know verb endings.  See page 98 and memorize it (S.V.P.)
J'aime parler = I like to speak = infinitive.  If you say "to speak," keep the "er"
J'aime parler  2 verbs.  1. aimer 2. parler.  Just like in English, you conjugate the first verb and keep the second in the infinitive.
He likes to play tennis
Il aime(or préfère) jouer le tennis
*Je préfère le tennis = I prefer tennis.
*What do you do on Saturdays?  Le samedi je _____________.  If it's a repeated (habitual) action done on one day every week, say le samedi.
(all days of the week are masculine, by the way)
Tricky because the book says that "à samedi" means "see you Saturday" (until Saturday)
Masculine (le) and feminine (la)
If a word ends with a consonant, it is almost always masculine.  Le.  Le lit.  Le crayon.
If a word ends in an "e", it is usually feminine.  La.  La guitare.
Le and la mean "the."  Un means "a" for masculine words.  Une means "a" for feminine words.
Une guitare.          Un crayon
*In a negative sentence, you don't use the words "un" "une" or "des" (some).  You just say "de" which means any.  I have some books=J'ai des livres.  I don't have any books = Je n'ai pas de livres.
Watch out for words that start with a vowel, though.  Catherine n'a pas d'appareil-photo
Ma voisine a une auto is pronounced mah vwah zee nah oo now toe
